Bakersfield – 11/28/2016: Kern Health Systems (KHS) partnered with two Kern County schools to implement a school-based Walking and Wellness program for the 2015-2016 school year. Students who participated in the Program from Pioneer School (K-8 th grades) in Delano and Jefferson Elementary School (K-5 th grades) in Bakersfield experienced a measurable change in their health from daily walking and good eating habits.
The Program challenged students to walk more using travel distances to world cities as goals. Each time a goal was achieved, students were rewarded reinforcing their accomplishment. The results from both schools surpassed expectations.
Linda Hinojosa, Health Services Coordinator for Delano Union Elementary School Dist., said that "The Delano Union School District, Superintendent Rosalina Rivera and the Board of Trustees are so pleased with the Kern Health Systems Walking Wellness Program. Students are receiving positive reinforcement for engaging in healthy, life-long habits. It benefits students both physically and mentally". Pioneer School will receive a $20,000 check on Wednesday, November 30th at 8am in front of students, parents, faculty and administration.
Russell Gayer, Principal of Jefferson Elementary, stated "Jefferson's partnership with Kern Health Systems has helped us teach our students about physical fitness and making healthy eating choices. Our students, families and staff have all participated in and benefitted from this partnership. Thank you Kern Health Systems for your partnership and support".
