What is Medi-Cal?

It is a health care program for qualifying individuals and families and it helps you get the health, dental, and vision coverage you need. It covers children birth through age 21, pregnant women and qualifying adults, including seniors and persons with disabilities. Eligibility is based on family size and family income. Changes in federal law allows California to expand its Medi-Cal health coverage program to all people who have incomes at or below 138% of the federal Poverty level (FPL). Medi-Cal can provide retroactive benefits up to three months prior to the date of the application.

How to apply for Medi-Cal?

  • By phone. Call the Kern County Department of Human Services at 877-410-8812 to see if you qualify for Medi-Cal.

  • Online. Visit C4Yourself® at C4Yourself is an online application system that allows you to apply for benefits. This is a secure site, and all your information will be private and safe.

  • In person. Talk to your doctor, clinic or visit the Family Resource Center in your community. Many of these offices have staff available who can help you apply.
