FAQ about KFHC's 24 Hour Advice Nurse Line

Q: When should I call the Nurse Response?

A: Nurse Response does not replace your physician’s office during the hours they are open. If you have specific questions about your treatment or a medical question, call your physician’s office. When your doctor’s office is closed or can’t be reached, call the Nurse Response.

Q: Do I talk with an advice nurse when I call Nurse Response?

A: When you first call, a Customer Care Professional will ask you a few questions about your condition and then connect you with an advice nurse or in some cases, arrange for a nurse to call you back.

Q: What help can the advice nurse offer?

A: Our advice nurses can help resolve minor concerns or advise you on what to do next, including calling your physician’s office to arrange an appointment or helping you to get urgent or emergency level care.

Q: What should I have ready when calling Nurse Response?

A: If possible, please have the patient’s Kern Family Health Care identification number or Medi-Cal recipient number ready when you call. If you’re calling for another Kern Family Health Care member that is a member of your family or a friend, that person should be with you in case the advice nurse has questions about that member’s condition.

Q: What’s the number for Nurse Response?

A: Just call 661-632-1590 (Bakersfield) or 1-800-391-2000 (Outside Bakersfield). The number is also printed on your Kern Family Health Care Member ID card.

Q: What other phone advice services can I get?

A:
When you call 661-632-1590 (Bakersfield) or 1-800-391-2000 (Outside Bakersfield) you also get a choice to enter the health information library. This service allows you listen to pre-recorded health topics in English or Spanish. You can also read about the health topics by logging on to Nurse Response and clicking on “my health (on the top of the page); you can then choose from the Topics A-Z to read the health topic you need. For Spanish, please click on ”Spanish Health Guide” found under the “Quick Links” section on the bottom of the page.
