Ask a nurse: Advice—just a phone call away
Your medical questions should never go unanswered. That’s why at Kern Family Health Care we have registered nurses who are specially trained to help assess medical problems and provide advice over the phone 24 hours a day.

With your PCP office and our KP OnCall phone line, you can speak to someone 24 hours a day to help you get the care you need.

Q: When should I call KP OnCall?
A: KP OnCall does not replace your physician’s office during the hours they are open. If you have specific questions about your treatment or a medical question, call your physician’s office. When your doctor’s office is closed or can’t be reached, call KP OnCall.

Q: Do I talk with an advice nurse when I call KP OnCall?
A: When you first call, an assistant to the nurse will ask you a few questions about your condition and then connect you with an advice nurse or in some cases, arrange for a nurse to call you back.

Q: What help can the advice nurse offer?
A: Our advice nurses can help resolve minor concerns or advise you on what to do next, including calling your physician’s office to arrange an appointment or helping you to get urgent or emergency level care.

Q: What should I have ready when calling KP OnCall?
A: If possible, please have the patient’s Kern Family Health Care identification number or Medi-Cal recipient number ready when you call. If you’re calling for another Kern Family Health Care member that is a member of your family or a friend, that person should be with you in case the advice nurse has questions about that member’s condition.

Q: What’s the number for KP OnCall?
A: Just call 1-800-391-2000. The number is also printed on your Kern Family Health Care Member ID card.

Q: What other phone advice services can I get?
A: When you call 1-800-391-2000 you also get a choice to enter the health information library. This service allows you listen to over 100 pre-recorded health topics in English or Spanish. Contact Member Services at 1-800-391-2000 for a guidebook to assist you in this process.
